Road Recycling Equipment: How Cold Milling Saves Money on Road Projects
The old approach to a worn road was brute force: rip it all up, truck it to the tip, and build a new one from bare ground. Road Recycling takes a different line. Grind up the surface that is already there, tidy it, and feed most of it straight back into the new road.
You buy less new material, cart off less waste, and the final bill comes in lighter. All of that starts at the milling drum.
What Cold Milling Does
It begins with grinding. Cold milling machines spin a drum full of carbide teeth and run it over the tired surface, cutting the worn asphalt away to whatever depth you dial in, in a single pass. No flame, no heating involved. It is a clean, controlled cut that leaves a flat base for the next layer.
And what comes off does not get binned. It tips onto a conveyor and into a truck, so the surface you tore up becomes the feedstock for the next one.
The Material It Produces
The stuff you mill off even has a name, reclaimed asphalt pavement, RAP for short. Do not picture rubble. It is old asphalt that still holds perfectly good aggregate and bitumen, both of which cost a fortune to buy new.
RAP already carries its own binder, so putting it back means buying less fresh bitumen, and bitumen is about the dearest thing in any road mix.
Cleaning and Sizing It
Straight off the road, RAP is all sorts of sizes with the odd bit of junk mixed in, so it seldom goes back as it is. Send it through a screening plant, and a crusher if it needs one, and you split it into even sizes and lose anything that should not be there.
Nail the grading here and the recycled stuff behaves itself in the mix. Skip it, and you are working blind.
Putting It Back to Work
After that, RAP goes back to the road one of two ways. Tip it into an asphalt mixing plant and it blends with new aggregate and binder into fresh hot mix, usually around 20 to 30 percent recycled, sometimes higher.
The second path never leaves site. Cold in-place recycling churns the milled layer with a binder right there on the road, so barely a truckload goes anywhere.
Where the Money Goes
The saving is not a single figure. It is a pile of smaller ones: less new aggregate and bitumen, less spoil to landfill, fewer tipping fees, and the road rehabilitation cost slides well under a full rebuild.
Then the haulage. Every truck of old road you are not shipping out, and every truck of fresh stone you are not bringing in, is diesel and hours you keep.

Done right, it does. Asphalt mixed with sensible amounts of RAP hits the same specs as all-virgin material, because the old bitumen and aggregate still pull their weight. It lives or dies on control, though. The RAP has to be screened, graded and dosed properly, and the mix designed around it. Handle it that way and you get a road that meets spec for less; cram in too much badly processed RAP and quality drops, which is the whole reason those processing steps exist.
