PTE Exam 2026: Types, Format, Scoring System & More

Types of PTE Exam 

As mentioned above, the PTE tests the overall proficiency of candidates in the English Language. It is particularly accepted by universities in Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. However, it is not limited only to students, as professionals and immigrants also take the tests. The type of tests for them varies from candidate to candidate. ·       PTE Academic 

The PTE Academic exam is meant for students aspiring to study abroad for both Postgraduate and Undergraduate Courses. The exam is divided into three sections: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The duration is 2 hours, and the score range is from 10 to 90. The test assesses a student’s ability for English-speaking environments, with questions like describing images, summarizing, and essay writing.

·       PTE Academic Online

The PTE Academic Online test model is similar to the PTE Academic test. But the key difference here is that candidates are allowed to take the test from home, with remote invigilation. It is a convenient way for students facing location constraints.

·       PTE General

This test evaluates general English skills rather than academic language proficiency, as it is taken by individuals for employment or personal development. It is bifurcated into six levels as per the CEFR (A1-C2), and the duration varies by level, between 1 hour and 15 minutes and 2 hours and 55 minutes. The score ranges from Pass, Pass with Merit, and Pass with Distinctions.

·       PTE UKVI

The PTE UKVI is the test for the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI). It is tailored for students and professionals who must meet the English language proficiency requirements in the UK. The test format and scoring system are both similar to PTE Academic, but it is certified for the UK Immigration.

·       PTE Home 

The PTE Home is a short and simplified test that focuses on basic English communication skills. Its main purpose is to meet specific visa requirements for settlement purposes, and hence only tests Speaking and Listening skills. The duration is 30 minutes, while there are only two scores: Pass or Fail. It is a good option for candidates applying for a Spouse Visa.

PTE Exam 2026 Format 

The PTE Academic exam is divided into three parts, with the PTE Academic Online and PTE UKVI using the same format. These are Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening sections over a duration of 2 hours. The test consists of 20 questions, including MCQ and essay writing. ·       Speaking &Amp; Writing

Part 1 of the exam has 9 questions that test your English Speaking and Writing skills. You will have about 77-93 minutes for this section.

·       Reading

This part contains 5 different questions, with 32-41 minutes allotted to test your Reading skills. In this section, you need to manage your time well, focusing on the important questions.

·       Listening 

Finally, the Listening section contains 8 different types of questions. These are based on audio or video clips and begin to play automatically. You hear each clip only once and are allowed to take notes. The duration of this section is 30-43 minutes.

PTE Exam Scoring System

The PTE uses an AI-based scoring to remove any human bias. The multiple-choice questions will be marked as right or wrong, but the more complex questions are based on a mix of criteria. Some questions are even reviewed by human experts before the automated score is finalized.

PTE Exam Fees 

The standard test fee is around ₹18,000 (₹15,254+GST), and you can book your slot 48 hours in advance. Additionally, if you wish to reschedule or cancel the exam, you can do so for free 14 days before the exam. Furthermore, the PTE test score is valid for 2 years.
