Your Summer Leadership Retreat Should Be a Whitewater Rafting Trip

Idaho is known for its stargazing opportunities. It’s also known for its many outdoor adventure opportunities. This summer, mix the two with Snake River whitewater rafting tours! Spend the day navigating Hells Canyon and enjoy the evening by looking up at the starry sky.

Idaho is a great place to stargaze. Head to the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve north of Sun Valley for some of the country’s darkest skies or Bruneau Dunes State Park south of Boise, where you’ll find the Bruneau Dunes Observatory. There are also countless opportunities to mix stargazing with outdoor adventure.

Throughout the summer, Snake River whitewater rafting tours take adventure seekers to Hells Canyon on the Idaho-Oregon border. During the day, it’s river rafting, hiking, fishing, and more. During the night, turn your attention upward and take advantage of the dark summer sky. If you want to mix stargazing with whitewater rafting, here are a few tips for a stellar experience.

Pack a Small Telescope

If you’re going on an all-inclusive whitewater rafting trip with other people, you can absolutely bring along a telescope. However, consider packing a small telescope. When you’re on an oar boat or paddle boat, space is limited. Pack a telescope and a tripod that you can easily store on the boat and keep with you throughout the trip.

Keep Your Optics Securely in a Dry Bag

When you’re Snake River rafting Idaho, you’ll have splashy rapids to contend with. Hells Canyon river trips take you down class III and IV rapids, which means you will get wet. Any gear not in a dry bag will also get wet. Even if you have dedicated cases for your telescope and tripod, keeping them in a dry bag (or bags) is recommended to ensure your gear stays well-protected.

Monitor the Weather

The weather can change in an instant in Idaho’s backcountry. When you’re on a guided river trip, your guides will keep tabs on what to expect. If an evening storm is expected to roll through, follow the river guide’s instructions and keep your gear in your dry bags for the time being. This will help keep your optics and other supplies secure until the storm rolls through.
