Why Travel Deserves a Spot on Your Class Schedule
Between early lectures and a suspiciously open Friday schedule, college leaves more room for travel than most students realize.
Somewhere between 8 a.m. lectures and questionable dining hall coffee, there's a version of college with way more stamps in the passport. Thankfully, travel doesn't have to wait for graduation. Treat it like an elective: something built into the semester on purpose, with the right gear like a travel duffel bag beside you.
Packing Light Is Your First Assignment
A quick trip squeezed between exams doesn't call for much. A medium-sized backpack with room for a laptop and a change of clothes is basically the whole packing list, especially with additional pockets that let you organize the essentials, so you're not digging past an econ textbook for a charger. Toss in packing cubes, skip the checked bag, and you're off to your destination.
Long Weekends Count as Field Trips
Long weekends tend to disappear into laundry and streaming binges, but they don't have to. Add a day before or after a holiday break, and that's a real getaway. Pick a destination close enough that you're not losing half the weekend to travel, ideally a direct flight, so more time goes to wandering somewhere new.
A carry on duffel bag for travel in the 30 to 40-liter range is the sweet spot, small enough for the overhead bin and roomy enough to hold a weekend's worth of essentials.
The Capstone: A Semester Somewhere New
A weekend trip is fun, but a semester abroad is where the real-life curriculum pays off. Fitting a whole term's worth of clothes, textbooks, and gear takes more than a backpack or a duffel, especially with side trips to two or three more countries built in.
Large size checked luggage gives you room to pack for a shift in climate, plus space for souvenirs you'll inevitably bring back home.
One city or five, the right luggage means showing up ready. Consider it extra credit for real life, no permission slip required.
