What Makes a Facebook Ad Convert (and Why Do Most Fail)?

A sweet shop owner came to us a few months ago, a bit annoyed. He'd put ₹15,000 into Facebook ads. Got hundreds of likes. Got maybe two orders.

We see this at our digital marketing agency in Bhopal more than almost anything else. And honestly, the ad wasn't terrible. It just wasn't built to sell.

Start With Who's Scrolling

Think about where your customer actually is when your ad shows up. Waiting for a chai, maybe. Half-watching a reel, thumb already moving. They aren't looking for you.

So, an ad that opens with "We are a leading provider since 2010" gets ignored. Nobody cares about your founding year yet. Compare that with a coaching class that says, "Class 10 maths feels impossible? Come to a free demo this Saturday." Same business, but now it's talking to a person with a problem.

The First Two Seconds

Polished design often loses to something rough. A phone video of the shop owner packing a box of ladoos will usually beat a glossy graphic with a gold border. People trust what looks real. In Bhopal especially, a familiar place, a face they might recognise, or a line in everyday Hindi does more than fancy English copy ever will.

Targeting: Too Much or Too Little

I've seen ads set to "everyone in Madhya Pradesh, 18 to 65." That's not targeting, that's hoping. I've also seen audiences so tiny that Facebook has nothing to learn from. Begin with your city, an age range and a couple of interests. Let a week of data tell you who's really clicking, then adjust.

And retarget. People who already visited your website or watched half your video are far cheaper to convert than strangers.

Where the Click Lands

This one hurt, because it's so avoidable. Someone taps your "50% off festive offer" ad and lands on a slow homepage with no mention of any offer. Gone. Whatever you paid for that click is gone with them.

Match the page to the promise. Make the next step obvious, whether that's a call button, a WhatsApp link, or a short form. Then open it on your own phone, on mobile data, not office wifi. Most of your traffic will be there.

"Contact Us for Details" Isn't a Call to Action

It's a shrug. Say what happens next and why now: "Order before Sunday, get free delivery." A deadline works because "later" almost always turns into never.

Give It Time, but Watch It

Plenty of businesses launch an ad, check it after seven days, and declare that Facebook doesn't work. Early campaigns rarely hit. Look at your click-through rate, what each lead costs you, and what people do after they click. Change one thing at a time. If you change the headline, image and audience together, you won't know what helped.

So, Why Do Most Ads Fail?

Usually, it isn't one big mistake. It's three small ones stacked up: a vague message, a weak page, no follow-up. Fix the weakest link first.

If you'd rather not guess, a digital marketing agency in Bhopal that knows local buyers can audit your campaign and tell you where the money is leaking.
