What Is Holster Cant?

Holster cant is the angle, or cant, of your concealed carry Glock 19 holster, relative to being perfectly vertical. Neutral, or zero, cant is vertical. It’s best for appendix carry and strong side carry. Forward cant, or the FBI cant, tilts the gun forward toward your strong hand side. This is usually between 10 and 15 degrees. It’s best for strong side and kidney carry. Negative or reverse cant is the opposite, tilting the grip backward from your strong hand. It’s best for appendix carry or cross-draw.

How Does Holster Cant Affect Concealment and Draw?

Zero cant allows for a straight-up draw stroke. However, it can cause the grip of your handgun to print for some body types, especially when concealed carrying behind the hip.

The FBI cant aligns your draw with your natural shoulder and elbow mechanics as you reach behind your hip to draw. Because the grip is closer to your body, it automatically reduces printing, at the cost of potentially being less comfortable when you sit for long periods, as it can dig into your side.

Reverse cant is ideal for cross-draw setups, as it’s angled toward your non-dominant hand for a fluid draw. It can help tuck the grip further into the body when using appendix carry holsters. Strong-side draws can feel awkward and slow, though, as the angle works against your wrist and elbow.

Finding Your Ideal Cant Angle
