What Is a Fossil? Understanding Fossil Formation and Preservation


Fossils are the preserved remains, impressions, or traces of ancient plants and animals that lived on Earth millions of years ago. They provide valuable evidence about the history of life and help scientists understand how different species evolved over time. Fossils are commonly found in sedimentary rocks and may include bones, teeth, shells, leaves, footprints, and other signs of ancient life.

Scientists study fossils to learn about extinct organisms, past environments, and changes in Earth's climate. Fossils act as natural records that reveal how life developed and adapted throughout history.

Fossils are formed when a plant or animal dies and becomes buried under layers of mud, sand, or sediment. Over millions of years, these layers harden into rock while minerals gradually replace or preserve the remains. In some cases, only impressions or traces of the organism are preserved.

There are several methods of fossil preservation. Petrification occurs when minerals replace the original remains. Compression creates thin fossil impressions under pressure. Moulds and casts form when an organism decays and leaves an imprint that later fills with minerals. Preserved remains can also occur when organisms become trapped in ice, amber, or tar, preventing decomposition.

Fossils play an important role in understanding Earth's past. They provide evidence of ancient life, help scientists reconstruct prehistoric ecosystems, and offer insights into evolution. By studying fossils, researchers continue to uncover the fascinating story of life on our planet.
