What are the Different Types of Acne?

Acne, medically known as acne vulgaris, is among the most widespread skin conditions, affecting approximately 80% of individuals at some point in their lives. It develops when the pores or hair follicles on the skin become clogged with sebum (the skin’s natural oil), dead skin cells, bacteria, and other impurities. Addressing acne is crucial, not only because the inflamed bumps can be painful and lead to skin discolouration but also because untreated severe acne may cause permanent scarring.

This blog aims to detail the types of acne and different acne treatment in Ludhiana available to manage the condition.

What are the Four Types of Acne?

Individuals with acne may develop different types of lesions or pimples, which can vary in both type and number depending on the severity of the condition, ranging from mild to severe acne.

1. Whiteheads

Whiteheads are small, flesh-toned bumps that form just beneath the skin’s surface. In lighter skin, they may appear as white spots surrounded by redness, while in darker skin tones, they may look dark or purplish. Whiteheads typically do not lead to scarring, although larger ones can sometimes make the nearby skin appear wrinkled.

2. Blackheads

Medically termed open comedones, blackheads are small, dark bumps that occur when a whitehead opens up. The dark appearance is not due to dirt but is caused by the oxidation of the material inside the pore when it’s exposed to air. The skin surrounding a blackhead usually remains unaffected.

3. Papules and Pustules

Individuals with moderate to severe acne may experience inflamed lesions known as papules and pustules, often referred to as pimples or zits. Papules are small (less than 1 cm), firm, red bumps that are tender to the touch. They are inflamed but do not have a visible head. They are slightly larger than papules and feature a visible tip filled with white or yellow pus.

4. Nodules and Cysts

When acne gets bad, it can cause deeper and more painful lesions called nodules and cysts. Nodules are hard lumps that grow under the skin. They are swollen but do not have a visible head. Cysts are big, soft bumps full of pus that appear red or white and are painful to touch.
