Two Things You’ll Never Have to Worry About With a Roller-Delayed PCC

A pistol-caliber carbine offers plenty of benefits over rifle-caliber builds. Low-recoil, a small, compact profile, and easy handling are just a few of these. 

Some of them are operated by gas systems; roller-delayed PCCs are a bit different and are actuated by different systems that only require a tuned bolt carrier and a recoil spring. 

The lack of a gas impingement system confers some benefits. Here are just a few of them.

The Gas System

Roller-delayed blowback actions have no gas system; the bolt locks and has rollers that fit into barrel trunnions that keep the bolt sealed until pressure drops past a certain, safe point, allowing the action to unlock and the bolt to roll back. 

This system is much more simplistic than a gas impingement action which entails a gas block, tube, and a bolt carrier with gas rings and a key. If the gas block is occluded, or the gas tube is heavily fouled, or the BCG’s gas rings are worn, the rifle may experience performance issues with respect to cycling. 

Some rifles also have adjustable gas blocks that enable the operator to address issues associated with an over or undergassed rifle, which can influence extraction and ejection. This level of flexibility is absent in a roller delayed system, but so are the potential issues arising from system complexity. 

In other words, the absence of a gas system in a roller-delayed platform results in much easier maintenance and operation. 

The Buffer Weight 

The gas system does not work in a vacuum; it utilizes a buffer system that consists of buffer weights and a spring that help slow the BCG, cut recoil, and return the bolt carrier group to battery. 

The buffer system is yet another instance of design complexity in the direct gas impingement system utilized by AR-15 rifles and similar platforms. While it does offer flexibility (the weight can be adjusted to tune recoil and cycling) it can also be confusing and not straightforward at all for shooters that are not well familiar with firearm engineering. 

A roller-delayed PCC lacks a buffer system entirely, which as explored improves the simplicity of the design, but it also frees the operator from the difficulty of tuning the buffer weight to adjust the performance of a rifle.

That said, it is also true that the lack of a buffer tube makes it possible to create a much more compact (and lighter) carbine.

To keep things at a high level, roller-delayed PCC platforms are operated by actions that are considerably more simplistic than carbines with gas systems.
