The most dangerous wet-road threat is hydroplaning. It happens when water builds under the tire faster than the tread grooves can channel it away. At that point, your tire isn't touching the road at all, it's floating on a film of water and steering and braking become temporarily useless. 

According to Bridgestone's tire safety research, hydroplaning can occur at speeds as low as 35 mph. You don't need a flooded highway for it to happen. A regular rain-soaked road after a decent downpour is enough.

What makes this more sobering is how much tire quality and condition vary. Consumer Reports analysts found that wet braking distances among new tires in the same category can differ by nearly 50 feet, roughly three car lengths from the best to the worst-performing models.

Running through a basic car safety checklist before rainy season hits is one of the simplest, most effective things a driver can do. Tires sit at the very top of that list, and for good reason.

Tread Depth — Don't Guess, Actually Check

Tread grooves exist for one reason: to push water away from the contact patch so rubber keeps gripping the surface beneath it. When those grooves wear down, water has nowhere to escape and hydroplaning becomes almost inevitable.

The penny test is the easiest way to check: push a penny headfirst into the groove with Lincoln's head going in first. If the top of his head is fully visible, your tread is dangerously low and replacement isn't something to delay.

AAA recommends cutting speed by one-third on slippery roads so if you'd normally cruise at 60 mph, wet conditions call for closer to 40. That feels like a lot until you're the driver who actually stops in time.

Turn cruise control off immediately. 

This surprises people, but cruise control is genuinely dangerous in rain. When hydroplaning starts, the system fights to maintain set speed, pushing power to the wheels at exactly the wrong moment. Always manage speed manually when roads are wet.

Extend your following distance. 

Five to six seconds of gap in heavy rain isn't overcautious, it's physics. Reduced braking efficiency on drenched roads means the car ahead of you can stop faster than you expect.

Keep every input smooth and deliberate. 

Sudden braking, sharp steering, hard acceleration, any of these can break traction instantly on a compromised surface. Think unhurried, think gradual, and give the tires the chance to do their job.

Flooded Roads and Standing Water: Know When to Stop

This is honestly where a lot of accidents happen. A puddle looks manageable. The road looks passable. And then something goes very wrong, very quickly.

Depth is almost impossible to judge accurately from inside a moving car. Even a few inches of fast-moving water can push a vehicle sideways. What's hidden beneath, potholes deep enough to destroy a rim, debris sharp enough to puncture a tire, road edges that have completely washed away, is invisible until you're already dealing with it.

  • When in doubt, don't. If you can't clearly see the road surface under the water, take an alternate route. No destination is worth the risk.

  • If crossing is unavoidable, slow to a near-crawl, stay toward the center of the road where depth is typically shallowest, and once through, tap the brakes gently several times to clear water from the rotors.

  • Puddles after storms often conceal damage that wasn't there before. Roads that are familiar in dry conditions can hide entirely new hazards after heavy rain.

If Hydroplaning Happens — Here's What to Do

Even with well-maintained tires and cautious driving, hydroplaning can catch anyone off guard. Knowing how to respond in those few seconds makes a real difference.

Ease off the accelerator, never brake hard. Hard braking during a hydroplane immediately escalates into a skid. Hold the steering wheel steady and resist the urge to jerk it while the tires work to reestablish contact with the road below.

Not all tires perform equally in wet conditions, and the gap between average and good is meaningful. All-season tires with deep lateral grooves and wide drainage channels handle most regular rainfall well. 

Wet-performance tires go further, silica-based rubber compounds maintain flexibility and grip on thoroughly saturated roads where standard rubber begins to lose its hold.
