Seven Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Diesel Generator. Most Suppliers Dodge the First One.

If you're buying a diesel generator set, these seven questions will tell you more about your supplier than any brochure.

1. Where was this set packaged, and where were the engine and alternator made?

This is the one that gets deflected. A generator is an assembly, and the engine, alternator and canopy often come from three different countries. A supplier who can't answer this quickly doesn't really know what they're selling you.

2. Are you an authorised reseller or dealer for this brand? Can you show me?

This single question separates a supported machine from a grey import. Ask for evidence, not reassurance. A grey import may have no valid warranty, no traceable build record, and nobody to call at 3am.

3. What warranty applies, for how long, and who honours it?

Get the terms in writing. "It's a Cummins" is not a warranty.

4. Can you supply the declaration of conformity, emissions data and guaranteed sound power level?

If your set may need an environmental permit, or sits in an air quality management area, you'll need all three. Ask at quotation stage. Discovering the paperwork doesn't exist at handover stops projects.

5. What's the control panel, and will it integrate with my ATS or BMS?

Controllers vary more than engines do. Pin this down before order, not during commissioning.

6. Is it in stock, or is that a factory lead time? And if it's stock, where physically?

"Available" and "in our warehouse" are very different statements. A machine on the ground beats a better machine twenty weeks away, every time.

7. What's parts availability like for this specific engine in the UK?

A cheap set with a six-week wait for a filter housing is not a cheap set.

A supplier who answers all seven without hesitating is one you can work with.
