A spiritual journey often begins with a quiet inner question: Who am I beyond the identities and roles of everyday life?
A spiritual journey often begins with a quiet inner question: Who am I beyond the identities and roles of everyday life? While this question may arise at different stages for different people, for Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, the inclination towards the inner world was present from childhood.
His life reflects a journey of devotion, spiritual inquiry and selfless service. From his early connection with Shrimad Rajchandraji to his work of guiding seekers across the world, his journey has remained centred on the pursuit of self-realisation and the desire to make timeless spiritual wisdom accessible to contemporary seekers.
India has a long tradition of spiritual Masters whose lives have inspired generations to look beyond the material dimensions of life. Among the famous Indian gurus of the present era, Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji's journey offers a contemporary expression of this timeless search, rooted deeply in the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandraji.
A Childhood Drawn Towards the Inner Self
Born on 26 September 1966 in Mumbai, Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji showed a natural inclination towards spirituality from a young age. According to Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, he would spend periods in silence and meditation even during his childhood.
At the age of eight, he encountered a photograph of Shrimad Rajchandraji. This became a deeply significant moment in his life. The profound experience that followed marked the beginning of a spiritual connection that would shape the course of his life.
As he grew older, this connection developed into a deep devotion to Shrimad Rajchandraji and his teachings. His spiritual inclination was accompanied by a keen intellect, allowing him to explore India's philosophical and spiritual traditions with depth and curiosity.
From Devotion to a Deeper Quest
For Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, spirituality was never limited to intellectual understanding. His connection with Shrimad Rajchandraji gradually became a complete dedication to the path shown by his Guru.
After completing his schooling, he resolved to dedicate his life to practising and sharing the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandraji. This devotion became an important foundation of his spiritual journey.
The lives of the famous saints of India have often reflected a similar movement from personal spiritual inquiry towards a life dedicated to the welfare of others. In Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji's journey too, devotion gradually became a way of life, expressed through spiritual practice, guidance and seva.
The Seeker as a Scholar
Alongside his spiritual quest, Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji pursued a rigorous academic study of philosophy. He completed his M.A. in Philosophy with a gold medal from the University of Mumbai.
His academic exploration eventually led him to undertake extensive research into the teachings and writings of Shrimad Rajchandraji, particularly Shri Atmasiddhi Shastra.
In 1998, he was awarded a Ph.D. for his research on Shri Atmasiddhi Shastra, a profound 142-verse composition by Shrimad Rajchandraji that explores the nature of the Self, bondage, liberation and the path towards spiritual awakening.
Yet, for Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, knowledge was never meant to remain confined to academic study. His approach has consistently focused on transforming spiritual understanding into lived experience. His teachings bring together philosophy, logic, devotion and practical wisdom, encouraging seekers to move from knowing about the Self towards experiencing it.
From a Personal Journey to a Spiritual Mission
As more seekers began coming into contact with Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji and his guidance, his personal spiritual journey gradually became the foundation of a larger movement.
In Mumbai, seekers began gathering to study and practise the teachings of Param Krupalu Dev under his guidance. This growing community eventually led to the establishment of Shrimad Rajchandra Adhyatmik Satsang Sadhana Kendra in 1994.
The vision continued to grow, eventually finding a permanent home in Dharampur.
The Beginning of Shrimad Rajchandra Ashram
In 1999, Dharampur's Mohangadh was selected as the site for what would become Shrimad Rajchandra Ashram. The Ashram was inaugurated on 6 April 2001 on the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti.
The Ashram became a space where seekers could come together for satsang, meditation, study and spiritual reflection. Over time, it grew into the international headquarters of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur.
What began as the journey of one person had now evolved into a spiritual space where countless others could begin exploring their own inner journey.
Making Timeless Wisdom Relevant
A defining aspect of Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji's work is his ability to present ancient spiritual wisdom in a manner that resonates with contemporary life.
His discourses draw upon the teachings of Shrimad Rajchandraji as well as texts such as Shri Natak Samaysaar, the Bhagavad Gita, Ashtavakra Gita, Narad Bhakti Sutra and other spiritual scriptures.
Rather than treating spirituality as something separate from everyday life, his teachings explore how awareness, compassion, gratitude, equanimity and inner transformation can become part of one's daily living.
This ability to connect timeless wisdom with the concerns of the present makes his work relevant to seekers across generations. In this sense, his journey continues the legacy of the famous Indian saints, who have each found ways to communicate profound truths in a language that speaks to the people of their time.
A Life Rooted in Seva
For Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji, spiritual growth finds its natural expression in selfless service.
This vision has manifested through Shrimad Rajchandra Love and Care, which works across areas including healthcare, education, child welfare, women's welfare, tribal welfare, animal care, environmental care and humanitarian relief, community care and emergency relief.
His work with children and youth also focuses on nurturing values alongside personal development, encouraging young minds to discover a deeper purpose and connect with the spirit of seva.
For him, spirituality is therefore not limited to meditation or study. It is reflected in how one relates to others, how one responds to the world and how one's inner growth becomes a source of compassion and service.
A Journey That Continues
The life story of Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji cannot simply be captured through dates, institutions or achievements. At its heart is a lifelong relationship with his Guru and an unwavering quest for self-realisation.
From the quiet spiritual inclination of his childhood to the creation of a global spiritual movement, his journey reflects how an inward search can gradually become a path of service for countless others.
His life also offers a contemporary perspective on India's enduring spiritual tradition. It brings together devotion and inquiry, knowledge and experience, meditation and seva.
Ultimately, the essence of Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshji's journey lies in a simple yet profound purpose: to realise one's true Self and allow that inner awakening to become a source of selfless service.
Realise One’s True Self and Serve Others Selflessly.
