Protein Shakes Versus a Shot: What Brad Pyatt Wanted to Change

Say a coach hands out shaker bottles at the start of a season. By week three, half are lost, a quarter are cracked, and the rest smell awful. Nobody planned it that way. It just happens, because protein shakes ask a lot of people who are already tired.

TRUBAR founder Brad Pyatt saw that pattern during his years around athletes. His answer, VKTRY Protein, doesn’t try to fix the shaker. It changes what’s inside and how big it is.

Starting From a Different Question

Most protein shakes start with a number. Twenty grams, thirty grams, forty. VKTRY started with a question: how small can a serving be while still giving real protein? The brand’s answer is 23 grams in 3.3 oz, with 100 calories and zero sugar.

The About page puts it bluntly, saying standard protein didn’t meet the founders’ standard and that they were tired of sugary bars and powders that didn’t deliver. Strong words, but the design backs them up.

Why Concentration Matters

A shake spreads protein across a large volume of liquid. A shot packs it tight. That’s what the site means by a 3.3 ounce advantage. Less liquid means less time drinking, less fullness, and less to carry around.

It also means flavor has to work harder, since there’s nowhere to hide. The brand offers four, Citrus Edge, Apple Surge, Melon Rush and Berry Strike.

The Whey Inside

The press release says VKTRY is powered by beta lactoglobulin, called BLG, a whey protein that occurs naturally and is rich in essential amino acids, including leucine. In plain terms, it’s a piece of whey chosen on purpose, not just a generic scoop.

The brand’s site adds more leucine for muscle growth and repair, more BCAAs to help reduce fatigue and soreness, and more EAAs for recovery. Treat those as company claims. They’re worth knowing before you compare any Protein Shakes on a shelf.

What Leucine Does

Leucine is one of the essential amino acids, meaning the body can’t make it on its own. Sports nutrition people talk about it constantly because it’s tied to muscle repair. That’s why VKTRY mentions it so often in its copy.

Does a higher leucine content change your results? The brand says so. Your own training, sleep and diet will matter far more, to be fair.

What Pyatt Says About It

During the national GNC launch, Pyatt said the brand isn’t trying to make a smaller protein shake. He described the shot as its own category with its own habits. That framing explains why the packaging looks nothing like a tub.

His background supports it. He’s a former NFL athlete, and the About page lists MusclePharm, TRUBAR and IQ Pouch among his companies.

The Trade Press Angle

Beverage Business Insights listed a former NFL player named Pyatt among the partners behind Rite Quiet Energy in an October 20, 2026 issue, which you can see in this Beer Insights listing. Only the summary is public. Even so, it shows him active in new beverage launches.

It’s a different product from VKTRY, of course. A caffeine free lift drink and a protein shot solve different problems.

Who Should Try It

Anyone who dislikes cleanup. Anyone who hates bloating. Anyone who’s lost three shakers this year. A six pack is $26.99 with free shipping, and the shots are in GNC stores nationwide since September 1.

Try two flavors first. Keep the other four around for the week.

The Short Version

Protein shakes have a job, and they do it fine. VKTRY Protein just asks whether the job could be done with a bottle that fits in your hand. Brad Pyatt thinks so. Judge for yourself.
