Price of a Cosmetic Manufacturing Plant
manufacturing and loan-licence manufacturing for the initial products. Start with your sales price and figure out how many units you will be able to sell per month.
The Short Version
The price of a cosmetic manufacturing plant is highly dependent on scale. The price of a small cream and lotion manufacturing plant with 30 litre wax and water phase containers and a 50 litre vacuum mixer is estimated to be about ₹12 lakh. Of course, the complete cost of the project, which includes building, infrastructure, and licence fees will be much higher. According to a single project report example, the price of the entire 890 kg/day manufacturing plant will be about ₹270 lakh, out of which ₹126 lakh will be spent on machinery.
Cost of Machinery Is Not Everything
New entrepreneurs usually account only for machinery in their budgets but often ignore other expenses. In the sample project mentioned above, the machinery cost will amount to ₹125.64 lakh whereas the cost of buildings and civil structures will be ₹75.06 lakh and the cost of land and site development ₹16.82 lakh. If you add the cost of water treatment, infrastructure, packing machinery, raw materials, working capital, and licences, the investment will be several times bigger.
Factors That Force the Prices to Increase or Decrease
Firstly, it is the capacity since a 50 kg batch plant and a 500 kg batch plant are two distinct projects. The second factor here is the automation since manual system with simple control systems is much cheaper compared to a PLC based plant with recipe storage. Another factor is the material grade as SS 316 contact parts are more expensive but more resistant to corrosion. Product type is also important since a plant producing creams, lotions and gels needs a vacuum emulsifying mixer while shampoos or liquid soaps require just a simple mixing tanks. In the given report, the vacuum emulsifying mixer is the most costly machinery equipment accounting for around ₹44 lakh.
Price Bands (Estimated)
Online portals give an idea of the prices. There is a listing on one of the Indian portals regarding the price for a cosmetic cream and gel manufacturing line, which costs ₹15 lakh. An automatic stainless steel ointment and cream plant is available on the other portal for ₹10.65 lakh. Take them as base estimates, not as quotes.
Hidden Costs Neglected by the Buyer
Licences and compliance involve time and cost. An on-site facility needs a cosmetics licence, while the loan license allows you to manufacture your goods using facilities owned by the other licensee, hence saving on initial costs. The buyer should also be ready for a qualified technical staff, testing procedures, and packaging process. From my experience, buyers who prepare in advance on electricity load, water treatment, and effluent treatment avoid costly mistakes after delivery of machines.
How to Make the Correct Comparisons of Quotes
Request from every provider to give you a written specification of capacities of the vessels, steel used, motor capacity, vacuum pump and control panel information. Find out what is offered, whether installation, training, validation services and warranties. Get references from existing installations. Quotes of two suppliers with similar amounts can mean very different service offerings.
Smart Starts for Lean Production
If money is limited, start out by using a batch plant with semi-automatic filler, and expand capacity as needed. Other possibilities include contract manufacturing and loan-licence manufacturing for the initial products. Start with your sales price and figure out how many units you will be able to sell per month.
