Pet Humanisation, Premium Nutrition and Smart Products Shape the UAE’s Pet Care Sector

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) pet care sector is evolving as pet ownership increases and consumers place greater emphasis on animal nutrition, healthcare and overall wellbeing. Pets are increasingly regarded as family members, influencing spending on premium food, supplements, accessories and specialised services. According to the UAE pet care report published by Vyansa Intelligence, the sector was valued at USD 285 million in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 415 million by 2032, registering a CAGR of 5.52% during 2026–2032.

Pet Food Remains the Leading Product Category

Pet food accounts for approximately 80% of the UAE pet care sector, making it the largest product category. The report projects volume growth of around 4.41% during the forecast period. Demand is supported by increasing pet ownership and greater attention to nutritional quality, with consumers showing interest in products designed to meet specific dietary requirements.

Dry food, wet food, treats and mixers form the main product formats. As pet owners become more conscious of animal nutrition, complete and functional food formulations are gaining relevance. Premium and customised diets are also attracting attention, reflecting the growing preference for products that address individual pet requirements rather than relying exclusively on standard feeding options.

Pet Humanisation and Health Awareness Influence Spending

Pet humanisation is an important factor influencing purchasing behaviour in the UAE. Owners increasingly consider pets part of their households, which is encouraging spending on products and services that support comfort, health and lifestyle. Rising disposable incomes also contribute to interest in premium food, accessories, supplements and specialised healthcare.

Greater awareness of preventive care is expanding demand beyond everyday feeding. Pet owners are showing interest in dietary supplements, veterinary diets and healthcare services that support long-term wellbeing. Veterinary clinics remain relevant in this environment because professional guidance can help owners understand nutritional needs and make decisions about specialised products.

Technology and Product Innovation Reshape Pet Care

Technology is becoming more visible in the UAE pet care sector. Wearable health trackers and smart collars can help owners monitor activity, location and aspects of pet wellbeing. AI-enabled grooming devices and other technology-led products also reflect interest in convenient solutions for managing routine care.

Product innovation extends to environmentally conscious offerings. Biodegradable waste bags and eco-friendly toys are gaining attention, particularly among younger and environmentally aware consumers. Customised nutrition plans and plant-based diets are also identified as emerging product developments. These innovations indicate how manufacturers are responding to changing preferences around personalisation, convenience and sustainability.

Offline Retail Retains a Strong Position

Retail offline accounts for approximately 70% of UAE pet care sales. Pet shops, superstores and hypermarkets remain important distribution channels because they offer product variety, physical availability and opportunities for specialist guidance. Consumers can compare products in person and purchase pet essentials alongside other household items.

The report identifies knowledgeable store personnel and broad product assortments as factors supporting the continued relevance of physical outlets. Supermarkets and hypermarkets also benefit from established shopping habits, while specialist pet retailers can provide more focused selections across food, accessories and healthcare products. These advantages help offline retail retain its leading position despite the growth of digital purchasing.

E-Commerce and Omnichannel Retail Expand Access

Retail e-commerce is gaining importance as consumers seek convenient purchasing options, competitive prices and access to a wider range of products. Online platforms allow pet owners to compare brands and arrange home delivery, which can be particularly useful for repeat purchases of food and other regular supplies.

Subscription services and promotional offers are also supporting online shopping. Digital channels can provide opportunities for smaller businesses to reach customers without depending entirely on large physical retail networks. This creates a broader competitive environment for manufacturers and specialist suppliers.

Omnichannel retail is becoming increasingly relevant as businesses combine digital platforms with physical stores. Click-and-collect services, home delivery and online product information allow retailers to connect different purchasing routes. Physical outlets can continue providing product guidance and in-store experiences, while digital platforms offer convenience and broader accessibility.

Competition Among Established and Specialist Companies

More than 15 companies operate in the UAE pet care sector, with the five leading participants accounting for approximately 65% of the market. The report identifies Waitrose Ltd, Charoen Pokphand Group, Thumbay Marketing & Distribution Co, Saint Vincent Group GT LLC and Mars GCC among the leading companies.

Other participants include Nestlé Middle East FZE, Naturally for Pets LLC, The Pet Shop LLC, Safcol Australia Pty Ltd and Beaphar BV. Competition involves established international businesses, regional distributors and specialist retailers. Their activities cover different parts of the sector, including food production, distribution and the sale of pet care products.

The presence of both large companies and smaller operators reflects the range of opportunities across product categories and sales channels. Businesses are competing through product availability, pricing, specialised offerings and retail convenience. Innovation in nutrition, healthcare and accessories also provides ways to differentiate products as consumer expectations evolve.

Animal Welfare and Responsible Pet Ownership

Animal welfare requirements form an important part of the UAE pet care environment. Federal legislation establishes responsibilities for animal owners and those involved in animal care, including the provision of suitable food, shelter and veterinary attention. The UAE's animal welfare law provides the legal framework for these responsibilities and the protection of animals.

These requirements are relevant to the wider pet care sector because responsible ownership involves more than purchasing food and accessories. Appropriate nutrition, healthcare and living conditions are essential considerations for households and organisations providing animal-related services. The regulatory framework also provides context for businesses involved in supplying products and supporting pet owners.

Outlook for the UAE’s Pet Care Sector

The UAE pet care sector is being shaped by increasing pet ownership, rising health awareness and the growing importance of pets in household life. Pet food is expected to remain the largest product category, while premium nutrition, supplements and specialised healthcare products are contributing to broader consumer interest.

Offline retail is likely to remain an important distribution channel because of its established presence and specialist guidance. At the same time, e-commerce and omnichannel services are changing how consumers discover and purchase pet care products. Technology-led solutions and environmentally conscious products add further dimensions to product development. Together, these developments illustrate how nutrition, innovation, retail convenience and responsible animal care are influencing the sector’s direction.
