Olet Branch Connections: Weldolets, Sockolets and Threadolets in Industrial Piping

Industrial piping systems frequently require smaller branch connections from larger headers. Where a conventional reducing tee is unsuitable or impractical, a properly designed branch outlet fitting may be used.

Olet-type fittings are commonly selected for process piping, instrumentation connections, vents, drains and other branch applications.

Different configurations serve different connection requirements.

A weldolet provides a butt-welded branch outlet. A sockolet has a socket-weld outlet, while a threadolet provides a threaded connection. Other configurations include nipolets, sweepolets and elbolets.

For applicable integrally reinforced forged branch outlet fittings, MSS SP-97 is a commonly referenced standard.

Carbon-steel outlets may use ASTM A105, while stainless-steel options may use ASTM A182 F304 or F316. Alloy-steel and duplex grades may be specified where appropriate.

The fitting must be selected according to the run-pipe diameter, branch diameter, header wall thickness, branch wall thickness and operating conditions.

For a butt-welded outlet, the branch end preparation and required pipe schedule must be compatible with the connecting pipe. Socket-weld and threaded connections have different dimensional and pressure-class requirements.

Contractors sourcing an olet supplier in the UAE  can review Krelson's branch-connection product range, including weldolets, sockolets, threadolets and other outlet configurations.

A complete enquiry should identify the outlet type, run size, branch size, material grade, applicable standard, connection, wall thickness or class and quantity.

Correct branch selection supports dimensional compatibility and helps meet the reinforcement requirements established by the piping design.
