My TSI Practice Test Score: What I Learned About Texas College Placement

The TSI felt different from the school tests I was accustomed to taking. Its purpose is connected to determining readiness for entry-level college coursework in English Language Arts and Reading and mathematics at Texas public institutions.

After reviewing my first TSI Practice Test Score, I realized that the most useful information was not the number alone. I needed to understand which skills produced that result.

TSI ELAR Became Two Separate Study Tasks

I initially treated ELAR as one large subject. That made my study sessions unfocused.

I eventually separated reading from writing. For reading, I concentrated on main ideas, evidence, and interpretation. For writing, I worked on grammar, sentence construction, and organization.

The separation helped me notice that I was stronger in some areas than others.

TSI Math Had Several Different Demands

Mathematics was also broader than I initially expected. The TSIA2 covers areas including quantitative reasoning, algebraic reasoning, geometric and spatial reasoning, and probabilistic and statistical reasoning.

I stopped spending nearly all my time on algebra and began rotating through different types of problems.

TSI Timing Was Not My Main Problem

One surprising discovery was that rushing was not always the cause of my mistakes. Sometimes I simply misunderstood what the problem required.

I began writing down what was known, what needed to be found, and which operation or concept seemed relevant. That helped me approach unfamiliar questions more logically.

TSI Review Became More Structured

For my next round of TSI Exam Review Questions, I did something different. I grouped questions by the reason I had missed them rather than by subject alone.

One group contained concept gaps. Another contained reading mistakes. A third included careless errors.

That organization made my preparation much more useful because I could address the cause of the mistake instead of repeatedly practicing the same type of question without understanding why I was missing it.
