Monfils Turns 40, Turns Back the Clock at the US Open
The Frenchman becomes the oldest man to win a match at Flushing Meadows since Jimmy Connors in 1992 — on his own birthday, no less.
This isn't just a nostalgic footnote for Monfils, either — it's part of a farewell tour. He's announced plans to retire after this season, and he's using his final trip through Flushing Meadows, a tournament where he once reached the semifinals in 2016, to make a few more memories along the way. He'd already gotten a head start on those memories earlier in the tournament, teaming up with his wife, Elina Svitolina, to reach the mixed doubles semifinals — their first time competing together.
