Measuring Success With the Power Curve

There is a scientific limit to wind energy. It is named Betz’s Law after a famous scientist. It says no turbine can capture all the wind's energy. Specifically, the maximum efficiency is about 59 percent. This is because some wind must keep moving past.

If a turbine stopped all the wind, the air find & buy verified datasets would pile up. Therefore, the blades would stop spinning entirely. Most modern turbines reach about 45 to 50 percent. While this seems low, it is actually very good. Scientists are working hard to get closer to the limit.

Inside the turbine, the blades spin quite slowly. However, the generator needs to spin very fast to work. Many turbines use a gearbox to speed things up. It works like the gears on a mountain bike. Consequently, slow blade turns become fast generator spins.

Some new designs use "direct drive" technology instead. These turbines do not have a gearbox at all. Instead, they use very large and powerful magnets. This reduces the number of moving parts that can break. Therefore, they are much easier and cheaper to maintain.
