K9 Jubi’s Service in Kaziranga National Park

K9 Jubi, an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois, was a fabulous dog that had been working for the Kaziranga National Park for more than seven years. She was part of the Aaranyak K9 Sniffer Dog Squad, which supports the forest staff in essential protection missions. The park's anti-poaching system relied heavily on her presence, and the dog earned the reputation of being disciplined and trustworthy even in the most challenging situations.

She was primarily a poacher & dead animal detector, and the dog's excellent sense of smell was crucial in field cases. The rapid and accurate detection of the dog prevented a lot of risks to the sensitive areas of the park. A good number of tourists who make Kaziranga safari bookings are often curious about how the trained dogs like Jubi are helping the conservation cause. The dog's work was a demonstration of how such dogs were indeed the lifeline of the wildlife in Kaziranga National Park.

Jubi’s Service Years

Jubi came into this world in 2017 and was trained under the most intense conditions from the beginning. Later on, she was assigned to the Bagori Range, which is acknowledged as the busiest and most important range in Kaziranga. Her mentor, Sanatan Mali, was always there to train and guide her, and she rapidly became very competent and efficient in carrying out her duties.

Her day-to-day work involved tracking suspects, scenting trails, and finding wildlife products that had been smuggled during the joint operations conducted with the forest and police teams. The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation was the major support for dogs like Jubi, who made it possible for them to get specialized training.

Important Operations by Jubi

Jubi took part in several important operations when serving:

• Finding a poacher's residence in Agoratoli in 2018, she helped police act immediately.
• In 2018, she also helped the police to find the main suspect in a murder investigation close to Geleki.
• In 2019 and 2020, she helped to catch a burglar and retrieve things stolen in the Bagori Range area.
• She helped forest workers find poachers’ houses in Burapahar in 2023, which led to more action.
• In 2024, she marched in the Republic Day Dog Parade at Bagori Range.
• Through her support in two major anti-poaching operations inside Kaziranga National Park, she greatly helped in 2025 to keep up protection efforts.

Her strong detection skills and focus under difficult conditions were shown by these acts.

Reactions to Jubi’s Passing

On November 7, Jubi passed away. This left the conservation staff and forest officers deeply saddened. Field Director of KNP&TR, Dr. Sonali Ghosh, thanked Jubi for her continuous efforts and major contributions to preserving the park.

Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar from Aaranyak also expressed his sadness, pointing out that Jubi's devotion helped the K9 team considerably.

Highlighting how dedicated she was to her work, Sanatan Mali, Jubi's handler, reminded everyone of her loyalty and competence. Her death struck the forest crew and the K9 team particularly hard.

Kaziranga National Park is under severe threats due to poaching and several wildlife crime activities. Therefore, it is essential to have the most advanced protection systems installed. Fast and precise detection assistance to forest guards, police authorities, and anti-poaching teams comes from canines undergoing the essential training, like Jubi.

A major part in the protection of rhinoceroses, elephants, and other species greatly impacted by unlawful activities was Jubi. Her participation resulted in a lot of successful operations. The wildlife of Kaziranga National Park depended on her for protection.
