International Courier From Bangalore: Express vs Economy Shipping
Choosing between express and economy delivery can make a noticeable difference when sending a parcel overseas from Bangalore.
An express shipment is generally designed for time-sensitive deliveries, while economy services focus more on controlling shipping costs. But the difference is not simply about speed. Weight, package size, destination, customs procedures, shipment contents, and transport routes can all affect the final delivery experience.
For businesses, students, families, and individuals sending parcels overseas, understanding these differences can help avoid unnecessary costs and delays.
Did you know? According to the CBIC, courier exports from India are subject to customs procedures and electronic declarations. This means international shipments involve more than simply handing a parcel to a courier.
What Makes Express and Economy Courier Services Different?
The biggest difference is the priority given to the shipment during transportation.
Express services are generally intended for shipments where delivery time matters more. Economy services are better suited to parcels where the sender has more flexibility.
Here is how the two services compare on a Fastway booking.

Look at the last four rows. Speed is the only real variable. Economy won't let a borderline item through, and express won't excuse a missing document.
The ranges you see on generic courier listings are broad. Treat them as a starting point. For a wider look at cost against speed, read our guide to express vs economy international shipping.
When Express Is Worth Paying For
Spend on speed when a late parcel costs more than the price gap. That usually means one of these.
- Documents with a deadline. University admissions, visa support papers, signed contracts and legal files. See our international documents delivery service.
- Business samples and urgent orders. A late sample can lose a client.
- High-value items. Fewer days in transit means fewer days of exposure.
- Medicines the recipient needs on schedule. These follow strict rules in both directions. Read about sending medicines abroad before you pack.
- Time-bound gifts. Rakhi and festival parcels have a fixed date. Missing it defeats the point.
When Economy Is the Smarter Pick
Choose economy when nobody is counting days.
- Gifts, books and clothing for family abroad with no hard date.
- Bulk home goods or seasonal stock.
- Repeat orders from sellers working on thin margins.
- Belongings after a move that you don't need on day one. For larger moves, look at excess baggage shipping.
Here is a simple test. If the recipient would shrug at a one-week delay, ship economy.
How Weight Decides Your Price
Chargeable weight is the higher of a parcel's actual weight and its volumetric weight. Fastway calculates volumetric weight as length x width x height in centimeters, divided by 5000.
Boxes surprise people here. A light parcel in a big box can bill like a heavy one.
- A box of 60 x 40 x 40 cm weighs 8 kg on the scale. Its volumetric weight is 96,000 / 5000 = 19.2 kg. You pay for 19.2 kg.
- Repack the same items into 45 x 35 x 30 cm. Volumetric weight drops to 9.45 kg. You pay for about half as much.
Two more limits apply. Fastway's FAQ puts the maximum at 30 kg per parcel, so split anything heavier. Shipments start from 1 kg. If the real weight exceeds what you declared, the extra is collected before dispatch. Use the volumetric weight calculator before you seal the box.
Documents You Need Before Pickup in Bangalore
Paperwork holds up more parcels than flight times do. Have these ready.
Personal goods, individual to individual
- One photo ID: Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID or driving licence.
- One address proof: Aadhaar, a utility bill, passport or voter ID.
- An invoice for the contents.
Company shipments and business samples
- Photo ID and signature proof of the authorized signatory or director.
- IEC, or an electricity or landline bill.
- A KYC form with signature and stamp.
- GST registration number and an invoice cum packing list.
- A tax ID for some destinations, such as Brazil, Mexico and Chile.
Commercial exports need more, including an IEC copy, AD code, Shipper's Letter of Instructions, SDF form and a packing list. Fastway lists the full set on its paperwork page.
For non-document parcels, prepare a customs invoice in two copies. Put one inside the parcel and keep one yourself. You can submit your documents early through Fastway's KYC page. Our guide to digital KYC for courier shipments explains why this step matters.
A change for business exporters: from April 1, 2026, courier exports no longer face the earlier cap of Rs 10 lakh per consignment. CBIC removed it through Notification 33/2026-Customs (N.T.), amending the Courier Imports and Exports (Electronic Declaration and Processing) Regulations, 2010. Higher-value commercial consignments can now move by courier. Whether it suits yours still depends on weight, destination and paperwork.
What You Cannot Ship by Express or Economy
Fastway's prohibited list applies to both services. Paying for express does not move an item off it. These are the main groups.
- Food: non-vegetarian food in any form (including non-vegetarian pickles), fruits and vegetables, raw rice and rice flours, liquids and semi-liquids, and anything that needs refrigeration.
- Medicines: Ayurvedic, homeopathic and non-prescription medicines carry restrictions. Ask before you book.
- Electronics with a battery source, including spare parts that contain one.
- Money and valuables: cash, coins, negotiable instruments, bullion, and precious or semi-precious items.
- Dangerous items: narcotics, firearms and ammunition, flammable and explosive products, radioactive material, hazardous waste, and anything on the IATA restricted or dangerous goods lists.
- Living and biological items: live animals and plants, bacteria or virus samples, and dry ice, including dry ice used for packaging.
- Other: lottery and gambling items, pornography, human remains, philately items, Indian postal articles, passports and US Green Cards.
- Anything banned by law in the origin, destination or any transit country.
Food is the grey zone. Fastway ships some packaged items through its food delivery service, but not perishables or liquids. Check that page before you pack.
If your parcel holds a gadget with a battery, stop and ask first.
The list changes over time, and an item that isn't on it can still count as prohibited. If Fastway or customs confiscates an item, Fastway takes no liability, and disposal or return-to-origin charges apply. Our post on international courier restrictions covers the topic in more depth.
Export Cargo Tracking: What Happens After Pickup
Once the pickup is booked, you receive a shipper's copy with a tracking number. Use it on Fastway's website to follow the parcel. You also get the number by email after dispatch. Read more about real-time parcel tracking and why it matters.
Two timing details help. Bookings made before 2 pm count as the same working day for collection. Bookings after 2 pm roll to the next one. If a pickup or delivery fails, Fastway contacts you by phone or email.
Expect one more step. Customs can open and inspect your parcel. Pack so it can be checked and resealed easily, and make sure the contents match the invoice line by line.
When a Parcel Is Not Enough: Air Freight Services
Courier suits parcels up to 30 kg each. Past that, or for commercial lots, look at air freight services or sea freight.
Bengaluru's airport is well placed for this. In FY 2025-26, 15 cargo airlines connected it with 38 destinations, including Chicago, Singapore, London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Fastway offers air freight and sea freight alongside courier. Ask for quotes on both routes and compare the total cost and timeline.
Common Mistakes Bangalore Senders Make
- Booking express out of habit for a parcel nobody needs quickly.
- Booking economy for something with a deadline, then paying again to resend.
- Quoting the scale weight and ignoring box size.
- Skipping the invoice, or understating the value. The sender is responsible for the accuracy of every declared value.
- Treating customs duty as part of the shipping charge. The destination country sets duty, and it is never included in the quote.
- Packing a restricted item just this once.
- Booking after 2 pm and expecting same-day pickup.
Pro Tips
- Ask for quotes on express and economy for the same parcel, using real weight and dimensions.
- Measure after you trim the box, not before.
- Keep a second copy of the customs invoice.
- Declare the true value. Fastway includes up to $100 of insurance per shipment and sells additional cover. Keep the original purchase bill if you want more.
- Send your KYC documents before the pickup slot, not during it.
- Check destination rules for medicines and food before you buy packing material.
Expert insight: Most people compare express and economy on price and days. The better question is what happens at the border. Both services pass through the same customs checks, so a weak invoice or a missing ID proof stalls either one. Money spent on express cannot fix paperwork. Fix the paperwork first, then choose the speed.
How to Book
- Get a quote for both services. Share the destination, weight, dimensions and contents through the quote form.
- Submit your KYC. Upload ID and address proof on the KYC page.
- Schedule the pickup. Use the pickup page. Fastway notes that charges can apply in remote or out-of-area locations, so confirm yours.
- Pack and prepare the invoice. Two copies: one in the box, one with you.
- Track the shipment. Use the number on your shipper's copy.
