How to Stop Eyeliner From Transferring to Your Upper Eyelid and How Many Eyeshadow Shades Do You Actually Need?

Two of the most common eye makeup problems Indian women deal with  eyeliner that stamps itself onto your upper eyelid by midday, and the complete overwhelm of standing in front of a 48-pan eyeshadow palette not knowing where to start. Both have simple answers. Here is what you need to know.

Why Does Eyeliner Transfer to Your Upper Eyelid?

Before getting to the fix, it helps to understand why this happens in the first place.

When you apply eyeliner on your upper lash line and then blink, the liner comes into contact with the skin just above your eye the area where your eyelid folds. If your eyelids are even slightly oily or if the eyeliner formula has not fully set, that contact is enough to transfer a print of your liner onto the skin above. After a few hours of blinking, this builds up into a visible smudge or stamp mark on your upper eyelid.

Oily lids make this significantly worse. In Indian heat your eyelids produce oil constantly that oil softens any formula that has not properly set and makes transfer almost inevitable with a standard liner.

How to Stop It

1. Let Your Eyeliner Fully Set Before Blinking

After applying liner, hold your eye open for 15 to 20 seconds before blinking. It sounds small but most transfer happens in the first 30 seconds before the formula sets.

2. Prime Your Eyelids

A thin layer of eyeshadow primer or concealer on your lids before applying liner creates a dry base. Oil production on primed skin is significantly lower than on bare skin, which means the liner has less moisture to soften it.

3. Set the Liner With a Matching Eyeshadow

After applying eyeliner, take a small angled brush and press a dark eyeshadow directly on top of the liner. This locks the formula in place and gives it a matte finish that does not transfer as easily.

4. Use a Formula That Is Built to Stay

The formula matters more than anything else. Sketch pen style eyeliners with an ink-based formula set harder and faster than gel or kohl liners. The MARS Sketch Pen Eyeliner uses exactly this an ink-black formula with a fine felt tip that sets quickly and grips the lash line without smearing. If you prefer a liquid liner with a slightly thicker line, the MARS Skyliner Liquid Eyeliner gives you that with the same long-wear payoff. Both are available in the MARS eyeliner collection.

5. Avoid Applying Liner on the Inner Waterline If Transfer Is Your Main Problem

The inner waterline produces moisture constantly. Liner placed there will almost always migrate upward. Stick to the lash line until you have the transfer problem sorted.

How Many Eyeshadow Shades Do You Actually Need?

The honest answer far fewer than most palettes would have you believe.

The beauty industry sells the idea that more shades means more versatility. A 48-pan palette looks impressive but most people use the same five to six shades repeatedly and ignore the rest. Here is what those shades actually are and why they are enough for almost any look.

The 3-Shade Rule for Any Eye Look

Every eye look no matter how simple or complex is built on the same three elements.

A transition shade - a matte shade that is one or two steps darker than your skin tone. This goes in the crease and creates natural depth. On Indian skin tones this is usually a warm brown or taupe.

A lid shade - the main colour on your eyelid. This can be matte or shimmer depending on the look. For daytime a matte neutral, for evening a shimmer or metallic.

A highlight shade - a light or shimmery shade pressed on the inner corner of the eye and the brow bone. This opens up the eye and adds dimension.

Three shades. That is a complete eye look. Everything else is layering and variation on top of these three.

What a Beginner Actually Needs

If you are just starting with eyeshadow, five shades cover you completely a light highlight, a medium transition, a deeper crease shade, a shimmer for the lid, and a dark shade for the outer corner or cut crease. You do not need 16 or 48 shades to create a range of looks. You need five well-chosen ones and the skill to blend them.

The MARS Dance of Joy Eyeshadow Palette is built around this logic a curated set of neutral and warm shades that cover the transition, lid and highlight roles without overwhelming you with unnecessary colours. If you want more shades as you get more comfortable, the MARS 16 Color Mesmereyes Palette steps that up with a full range of mattes and shimmers across warm and cool tones. The Bottom Line

Eyeliner transfers because oily lids and fast-setting formulas do not mix well in Indian conditions. The solution is priming your lids, letting the liner set before blinking, and using a formula with an ink base that dries harder. Eyeshadow is simpler than the industry makes it look three shades build any complete eye look and five shades give you enough variety for every occasion. Start small, learn to blend, and build your collection from there.
