How to Keep Your Jewellery Collection Looking Impeccable

How To Keep Your Jewellery Collection Looking Impeccable

When you invest quite a bit of money in your jewellery, you want to make sure that you are keeping it in the best possible condition, and we are here to show you how! From how to clean your jewellery to storing it, get ready to make sure your jewellery collection is looking better than ever.

Cleaning Your Jewellery

Firstly we are going to cover how you should be cleaning your jewellery! This applies to any pieces containing precious gemstones or metals, or pieces you want to take really good care of, like meaningful Arabic necklaces or your family jewellery. To clean your jewellery, combine warm water with mild soap to create a weak soapy mixture. Dip a very soft bristled toothbrush in this mixture and use this to brush the jewellery, without submerging it completely. This is especially important for delicate or vintage jewellery, as it can weaken settings in some cases.

Once all the dirt, dust and grime has been loosened, rinse your jewellery really well under a running tap and then hang until completely dry. You should never leave your jewellery laid flat to dry, as it can end up being sat in moisture which will cause rusting and damage over time. Instead, hang all of your jewellery on a stand to dry completely, for at least 24 hours, before polishing and putting away. Just make sure everything is fully dry to prevent any moisture building up in your jewellery box.

Take It To A Jeweller Once A Year

Whilst we’re on the topic of cleaning, it is also important to take your jewellery to a professional jeweller once a year. When you do this, they will be able to give your jewellery a really thorough clean without damaging the piece. This will also be an opportunity for the jeweller to identify any weaknesses with the jewellery that can be rectified before further damage is caused.

Some jewellers will offer complimentary annual cleaning with a purchase, so this is something you should definitely take advantage of. If this is not a part of the purchase, make sure that you make it a priority to go at least once a year.

How To Store Your Jewellery

Last but not least, we’re going to discuss how to store your jewellery! This is very important, as if you store your jewellery wrong, it can cause serious damage.

So, the most important thing to remember is that jewellery does not fare well in environments that are prone to changing temperature significantly. For example, conservatories get very cold in the winter and very warm in the summer, so this definitely wouldn’t be a good place to store it! Instead, you should keep your jewellery in storage within a cupboard in a room that has a steady temperature. Somewhere like a bedroom in a place that doesn’t get blaring sunlight and therefore heat, all day.

Jewellery also doesn’t cope well in humid conditions, so avoiding anything like a bathroom is highly recommended. Somewhere room temperature without any humidity is ideal.

Everyday Wear

When it comes to everyday wear, there are a few things to bear in mind when it comes to your jewellery. Firstly, avoid wearing your jewellery when you are going to be in contact with water, such as swimming and showering. You should also not wear jewellery when cleaning, as the water and cleaning products can cause damage. This is especially important for things you wear everyday, like vintage engagement rings. Finally, if you are applying any products like perfume or creams, make sure that they are fully dried or absorbed before you put your jewellery on, because again, this can cause damage.
