How to Fix Low Output From an Audio Transformer

When Your Audio System Suddenly Sounds Too Quiet

When you turn on your speaker system, you expect to get the same clear sound. However, something feels off. The sound is there, as the amp is running and the speakers appear to be alright. However, the sound is weaker than what you expected.

At first, you think that possibly the amp has developed an issue. It is possible; however, the problem could be with the speakers.

An audio transformer is used to transmit audio electrical signals from one part of the system to another. It can be used for isolating electrical systems as well as matching the needs of the interconnected circuits. In case of weak output signals, it is not necessarily the transformer that is faulty, but rather a loose wire or weak input signals.

Instead of replacement, it is necessary to follow the process of transmission of the signal and see where the problems occur.

Start by Checking the Audio Source

Before disassembling the unit or searching for a new part, try to check the signal coming into the circuit it may save you some unexpected time.

Consider a situation when you connect your telephone to an amplifier and notice that there is almost no sound coming from it. The natural reaction in such case is to assume that something is wrong with the amplifier since it is the place where the fault becomes obvious. But maybe the output level of the telephone is low or the cable does not transfer the signal properly. The amplifier can only process the signal it gets.

The same rule holds true for electronics if the signal coming to the primary winding of the transformer is already weak, the output will be weak in most cases as well.

Make sure that the source is set properly and look for any visible signs of cable damage. If you have appropriate instruments, you may compare the input signal to the expected operation level. When the input is weaker than it should be, try to find the reason why the source does not produce enough signal first.

Look Closely at the Wiring and Connections

Sometimes the fault is much simpler than expected. A connection that looks secure from the outside may have a loose terminal or a cracked solder joint. The equipment might continue working, but the signal may become weak or unreliable.

Switch off the equipment and disconnect it from its power source before inspecting the wiring. Look for damaged cables, loose terminals, discoloured areas and signs of overheating. Pay particular attention to the primary and secondary connections.

The audio transformer can have various terminals depending on the configuration of the winding or voltage ratio of the transformer. In case the wire is attached to the wrong terminal, the result might not conform to the requirement of the circuit. It would be better to check the manufacturer's wiring diagram than make any guess.

One must not touch the inside parts of the device when it is still powered. There are some audio devices which have hazardous voltages even when switched off. One must seek the help of a qualified technician if the circuit has a high-voltage part.

Could Impedance Be the Problem?

Imagine two devices that function well independently but do not perform well when connected. This might not be because of any faulty part of the devices but rather due to their differences in electrical specifications.

Here, impedance comes in handy. In audio circuits, it is vital for the source and receiving device to match each other in order to allow for effective transmission of the signal.

The use of an audio transformer could be useful in matching the impedance of different circuit stages. This should however depend on the winding ratio and the particular load required for the transformer. Use of a different load could cause the voltage at the secondary winding to vary and give you low output levels.

Consider the specifications of the transformer and match them with the needs of your equipment. In case your transformer has several taps, ensure that the right terminals are connected.

It may be easy to solve the problem by selecting a transformer that gives higher output voltages. This would not help if the problem is a wrong load or wrong connections.

Pay Attention to Heat and Distorted Sound

Sometimes, a low output isn't the only indicator of an issue. There might also be a problem with distorted sounds. The music may become unnatural and the voices can lose clarity as the volume rises.

Besides, if the transformer is hot, it is worth considering the possibility of its failing. The transistor could be overheating because too much current is being drawn from it, inappropriate load is applied or it is operated outside the rating limit.

Heat may indicate a malfunction or another possible problem that may occur with the magnetic core when it stops responding to the changes in the magnetic field. The problem can occur due to a very high signal or the frequency exceeding the limits of the transformer.

An appropriate choice of an audio transformer should always work within its specifications. Check the frequency range and parameters of the signal first before jumping into the conclusion that there is something wrong with the part. If you detect any smell of burning, turn off the machine.

Test the Output Before Replacing Anything

After checking the input signal, wiring and load, measurement becomes helpful in identifying the fault.

Using an appropriate measurement device, it becomes possible to measure the input signal going to the primary winding and compare it to the voltage in the secondary winding. The results obtained should be in line with the turns ratio of the transformer under the test conditions. It is important to note that it would also depend on the load used.

A multimeter becomes handy in detecting an open winding by measuring the continuity after the transformer has been disconnected. Nevertheless, if the readings of the resistance show normal values, it does not mean that there is no problem with the component.

There are cases when the input is normal but the output voltage is way lower than expected. In this case, the fault can be inside the transformer or somewhere in the circuit which is connected to the secondary winding of the transformer.

CET Technology provides magnetic components in OEM application where electrical requirements and operating conditions dictate component design and manufacture.

Should You Repair the Transformer or Replace It?

The correct answer will depend on your findings during the tests you conduct. Whereas a simple wiring problem can be fixed easily, a damaged winding or insulation would be more problematic and could even need the intervention of professionals.

It would be advisable to make sure that the following criteria are met before choosing which transformer to use: voltage ratio, impedance, frequency of operation, and power rating. Isolation conditions and dimensions are the important factors to be considered as well, especially in cases when the transformer needs to fit into an existing item.

It is also essential to understand that while two transformers may look the same, they may give different results in the circuit due to a different winding arrangement, wire material, and electrical properties.

After the repair or replacement, the equipment has to be tested again under the normal working conditions. The output has to correspond to the circuit, and there shouldn’t be any signs of overheating or distortion in its work.

Getting Your Audio Output Back to Normal

In the case when the audio system suddenly begins operating with reduced audio, it is very natural to blame the device which is closer to the cause of the problem. However, in reality, it may happen that the cause of such behavior of the system lies in the weak input signal, poor contact or electric imbalance in the signal chain.

The audio transformer should be tested within the whole chain of the circuit rather than being considered as a standalone unit. It is necessary to start from checking the input signal, connections and matching the load. Then it would be necessary to test the transformer itself.

It is worth considering all possible faults and then solving them in order to avoid replacement of non-defective devices and simplify the restoration of the expected output.
