How Refrigerated Trucks Support India’s Cold Chain

India’s refrigerated truck sector is expanding with rising demand from food, dairy, pharmaceuticals, frozen products, and organized retail cold-chain logistics.

Refrigerated trucks are becoming important in India’s food, pharmaceutical, dairy, seafood, meat, poultry, frozen food, and organized retail supply chains. These vehicles help move temperature-sensitive products from production points to warehouses, distribution centres, stores, restaurants, hospitals, and end users. Their role is linked to product safety, shelf-life protection, reduced spoilage, and better access to fresh and processed goods across cities and regional markets.

A recent study by MarkNtel Advisors highlights that the India refrigerated truck sector was valued at around USD 130 million in 2025. It is anticipated to expand from USD 158.95 million in 2026 to USD 226.01 million by 2032, reflecting a CAGR of 6.04% during 2026–2032. This growth is supported by cold-chain logistics adoption across food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, dairy, processed food, and organized retail.

Food Supply Chains Need Temperature Control

India’s food supply chain includes many products that require controlled movement after harvesting, processing, packaging, or storage. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, frozen foods, seafood, meat, poultry, bakery items, and ready-to-eat products can lose quality if exposed to unsuitable temperatures. Refrigerated trucks help maintain product condition during movement, especially when goods travel across long distances or pass through multiple handling points.

Cold-chain transport also supports better coordination between producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, and food service operators. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries notes that cold chain infrastructure aims to establish links from farm gate to consumer for agricultural, horticultural, dairy, fish, marine, poultry, and meat products. This makes refrigerated vehicles important not only for urban deliveries but also for connecting production clusters with demand centres.

Dairy and Frozen Foods Strengthen Demand

Dairy distribution is one of the most practical use cases for refrigerated trucks because milk, curd, cheese, butter, ice cream, and value-added dairy products require careful handling. India’s large dairy consumption base creates recurring transportation needs from processing plants to depots, retailers, and institutional buyers. Refrigerated vehicles help limit quality loss and improve delivery reliability across both metropolitan and semi-urban markets.

Frozen and chilled food categories also depend on steady temperature management. As more households purchase packaged foods, frozen snacks, meat products, seafood, desserts, and convenience meals, retailers and distributors require vehicles that can preserve cold conditions during last-mile and mid-mile movement. This makes refrigerated trucks useful for supermarkets, quick-service restaurants, cloud kitchens, online grocery platforms, and food manufacturers.

Pharmaceutical Logistics Adds Another Use Case

Temperature-controlled transport is also relevant for pharmaceutical products, vaccines, diagnostics, and healthcare supplies. Some medicines and biological products require stable conditions during storage and movement. Any major temperature variation can affect quality, safety, and usability. Refrigerated trucks support hospitals, laboratories, distributors, and pharmaceutical companies by helping products move through controlled logistics networks.

This requirement became more visible as healthcare supply chains expanded and became more specialized. While food remains a major application area, pharmaceutical logistics encourages demand for reliable refrigeration systems, vehicle monitoring, route planning, and documentation. Operators serving this segment often need stronger quality controls, trained handling practices, and temperature tracking to meet customer and regulatory expectations.

Technology Improves Fleet Reliability

Modern refrigerated trucks increasingly depend on refrigeration units, insulated bodies, GPS tracking, temperature sensors, telematics, and fleet management software. These technologies help operators monitor cargo conditions, vehicle routes, fuel use, delivery timing, and equipment performance. Better visibility reduces the risk of temperature deviation and allows logistics providers to respond more quickly when delays, power issues, or equipment faults occur.

Food safety rules also highlight the importance of temperature management. FSSAI guidance states that food businesses should maintain systems to ensure that time and temperature are controlled effectively where critical to food safety and suitability, including during transportation of high-risk foods. Clearer compliance expectations make dependable refrigerated transport more important for organized food handlers, retailers, and logistics providers.

Infrastructure Gaps Create Expansion Scope

India’s refrigerated trucking segment still faces challenges related to operating costs, uneven infrastructure, fragmented logistics, return-load limitations, power availability, maintenance quality, and driver training. Smaller food businesses may find temperature-controlled transport more expensive than conventional vehicles. Long routes, traffic delays, and inconsistent loading practices can also affect efficiency and product condition.

Despite these constraints, refrigerated trucks are likely to remain important as India’s food processing, pharmaceutical, e-commerce grocery, and organized retail ecosystems grow. The sector’s progress will depend on better cold storage integration, route density, vehicle financing, technology adoption, skilled fleet operations, and stronger coordination between producers and distributors. As cold-chain networks mature, refrigerated transport can support safer movement of perishable and temperature-sensitive goods across the country.
