How Much Does It Really Cost to Build a Website in 2026?
Short answer: it depends. I know, annoying. But if you've ever collected quotes from two or three agencies, you already know why. One says ₹12,000. Another says ₹45,000. A third wants over a lakh, for what sounds like the same website.
So, who's right? Usually all of them, because they're quoting different things.
The Range, Without the Fluff
Most small businesses in India end up paying ₹15,000 to ₹1,50,000. If you run a clinic, a coaching institute or a local service and just want a fast, clean site that people can find on Google, expect to land around ₹30,000 to ₹80,000. That's the sweet spot I see most often when talking to owners looking for a web development company in Bhopal.
The cheap end (₹15,000 to ₹40,000) is typically a WordPress site, five to eight pages, built on a theme that's been tweaked to match your logo and colours. Perfectly fine if you just need to exist online.
Pay more and you get design made around your business instead of the other way round. Better speed, cleaner code, a booking form or WhatsApp button that actually works.
Online stores cost more. Much more, sometimes. Payment gateways, GST invoices, shipping rules, hundreds of products to upload. Think ₹60,000 to ₹2 lakh and up. Custom apps, like a student portal, begin around ₹1.5 lakh since that's real software work.
What the Quote Leaves Out
Here's where people get caught. The build isn't the only expense.
Domain: about ₹700 to ₹1,500 a year. Hosting: anywhere from ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 yearly, and honestly, this is where cheap sites often get slow. Maintenance, if you'd rather not touch backups and update yourself, runs ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 monthly. Photos and written content? If you don't have them, add that too.
A quote that skips all this isn't cheap. It's just unfinished.
Same "Five Pages," Very Different Websites
I once heard a business owner say, "But they both promised five pages!" Sure. One of those sites might be running a pirated theme (a security problem sitting quietly in the background), uncompressed images, no mobile testing. The other was checked on an ordinary Android phone over ordinary 4G, because that's where most of your customers are.
Six seconds to load? Visitors are gone. Nobody wins that one, and fixing it takes tedious hours that someone has to be paid for.
Freelancer, or a Team?
Both can work. Freelancers are cheaper and some are brilliant. But you're depending on one person, and people get busy, change jobs, stop replying. A proper web development company in Bhopal will cost more up front, though you get designers, developers and support in one place. Picture your contact form dying at 9 p.m. the night before a festival sale. You'll want someone to call.
Your call, really. Just be realistic about how much help you'll need after launch, because that's the part people underestimate.
Not Overpaying
A few things that help, none of them complicated.
Know what you want before you ring anyone. Pages, features, a couple of sites you like. Vague briefs invite padded quotes.
Ask what's included, and get it in writing: revisions, basic SEO, some training, a few months of support.
Open their past work on your own phone. Portfolio screenshots always look great.
And don't launch with everything. Start small, watch what your visitors actually click, then build on it.
Also, be suspicious at both extremes. A ₹5,000 "complete website" probably isn't. A ₹5 lakh quote for a simple brochure site needs some explaining.
So, What Should You Set Aside?
For a local business, ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 for the build and a modest yearly sum for hosting and upkeep is a sensible plan. Not nothing, I know. But a website keeps working while your shop is shut, and that's worth something.
If a team asks about your customers and goals before they name a price, you're probably talking to the right people.
