Evaluating the Safest and Least Safe Electric Cars (EVs) in India

As India moves towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future, the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is on the rise. However, with this increasing adoption, safety remains a critical concern for consumers. This article explores some of the safest and least safe electric cars currently available in the Indian market, based on crash test ratings, safety features, and user feedback.

Safest Electric Cars in India

1.      Tata Nexon EV The Tata Nexon EV is one of the safest electric vehicles in India, built on the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) variant of the Tata Nexon, which has a 5-star rating from Global NCAP. This compact SUV includes advanced safety features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD, corner stability control, and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Its high-strength steel structure offers enhanced crash protection, making the Nexon EV a reliable choice for safety-conscious buyers.

2.      MG ZS EV The MG ZS EV is also a notable option for safety. It is designed with robust safety standards, featuring six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a 360-degree camera for better maneuverability. The ZS EV has undergone rigorous testing and received favorable ratings in international crash tests, though specific ratings for the Indian model are not always available.

3.      Hyundai Kona Electric The Hyundai Kona Electric is globally recognized for its safety credentials. In India, it upholds this reputation with features like six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems. The Kona Electric has a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, and while the Indian variant may differ slightly, it remains a very safe vehicle.

Least Safe Electric Cars in India

1.      Mahindra e2o Plus The Mahindra e2o Plus, despite being an early entrant in the Indian EV market, falls short on safety. It lacks advanced safety features such as airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control, which are now standard in most modern vehicles. Its lightweight construction, while beneficial for efficiency, does not provide adequate protection in collisions. Its crash test performance has been underwhelming, making it less suitable for safety-conscious buyers.

2.      Tata Tigor EV (Old Version) The older version of the Tata Tigor EV has been criticized for its lack of comprehensive safety features. While the newer model has seen significant upgrades, the earlier version lacked essential safety equipment like airbags and ABS. Its crash test ratings were also not up to the mark, raising concerns about occupant safety in severe collisions. Buyers should opt for the latest model with enhanced safety features.

3.      Mahindra eVerito The Mahindra eVerito is another EV that does not fare well in terms of safety. It comes with basic safety features but lacks advanced systems such as multiple airbags and electronic stability control. The structural integrity of the vehicle is also a concern, as it does not provide the same level of protection as newer EVs. This makes the eVerito a less favorable option for those prioritizing safety.

Safety is a crucial consideration when purchasing an electric vehicle, and Indian consumers have a variety of options. The Tata Nexon EV, MG ZS EV, and Hyundai Kona Electric stand out as the safest EVs, boasting advanced safety features and strong crash test performances. In contrast, older models like the Mahindra e2o Plus, the previous version of the Tata Tigor EV, and the Mahindra eVerito fall short in safety standards. Prospective buyers should prioritize models with comprehensive safety features and robust crash test ratings to ensure peace of mind on the road. As the EV market in India continues to evolve, it is hoped that all manufacturers will strive to enhance the safety of their offerings, contributing to a safer and more sustainable automotive future.
