East vs. West: Contrasting Attitudes Toward Plastic Surgery

East vs. West: Contrasting Attitudes Toward Plastic Surgery

Western culture differs greatly from that in Asian and Arab countries. So it’s no surprise that attitudes towards health and beauty can differ drastically. One area where this is extremely visible is the plastic surgery industry, where South Korea has become a leading nation. This article will explore how attitudes towards plastic surgery differ in the Western world compared to South Korea.

Normalisation vs Caution

One of the biggest differences in attitudes towards plastic surgery in Asia compared to the Western world comes from how accepted procedures are. In countries like South Korea, plastic surgery isn’t just accepted, but expected. In fact, it’s common to gift plastic surgery at times like graduation, which highlights just how normalised surgery has become in South Korean culture.

In nations such as the UK and the USA, there’s far more scepticism and caution around plastic surgery. For some, the caution comes around the actual procedures, with many people perceiving them to be dangerous and an unnecessary risk. Others would argue that procedures designed to enhance the way we look are vain and contribute towards unrealistic expectations for others.

Celebrity Influence

In Korea, major celebrities such as K-Pop stars are open about their relationship with plastic surgery, which contributes towards a more accepting society. This is a far cry from celebrities in Western countries who often try to hide their relationship with plastic surgery, which possibly arises from the taboo that Western societies have created around plastic surgery.

This secrecy around plastic surgery often means it becomes a major talking point for media outlets too, with the extra scrutiny further contributing towards negative perceptions of aesthetic procedures.

Surgical Standards

South Korea is developing a reputation for being a leader when it comes to plastic surgery, and the nation is beginning to draw visitors into the country who want to experience South Korea’s high standard of plastic surgery.

While the UK isn’t necessarily known for being a leading nation when it comes to plastic surgery, it is generally considered a safe place to undergo plastic surgery. However, in recent times, there has been an increase in the number of unlicensed backstreet surgeons offering unregulated procedures.

Health &Amp; Beauty Trends

In Korea, the preference is for subtle procedures that are considered minimally invasive. This includes procedures like piezo rhinoplasty, which can help patients achieve a more natural look.

In recent years, minimal procedures have also become the trend in Western nations. However, this hasn’t always been the case, as countries like the UK and the U.S. have also seen periods where patients have chased more noticeable changes as opposed to subtle ones.

Final Thoughts

While there are some similarities in terms of beauty trends between South Korea and the Western world, attitudes towards plastic surgery are generally very different. In the West, scepticism and negative attitudes are common, with many people viewing plastic surgery as a vain, dangerous procedure. In Korea, plastic surgery is far more normalised, with celebrities speaking openly and many people receiving surgery as a gift.
