Do Melanin Tanning Injections Change Moles? Experts Explain

You inject a tiny needle into your belly. A week later, your skin looks like you spent days on a beach in Spain. Then you spot a dark freckle that was not there before. Is that normal?

Lots of people are asking. Search results full of melanotan injections for sale make the whole thing look harmless. Skin doctors say the videos skip one detail: moles that darken, change, and pop up in new places. Here is what experts have seen so far, and what to do if your skin has changed.

What Are Melanin Tanning Injections?

Melanin tanning injections contain melanotan, a lab-made copy of a natural hormone. That hormone tells skin cells to make more melanin, the pigment that darkens skin. The most common type is Melanotan II, sold as injections, nasal sprays, and drops.

Who Uses Them?

A 2025 interview study of 29 users found an average age of 39, and most were introduced to it through gym culture.

Is It a Licensed Drug?

No. A related drug called afamelanotide is prescribed for certain light-sensitive skin conditions. Melanotan II is not approved by any medicines regulator.

Do Melanin Tanning Injections Change Moles?

Yes, doctors have reported it many times. Melanotan boosts pigment in all pigment cells, and moles are made of those cells. Existing moles darken, and new freckles can appear.

What Case Reports Show

In 2009, the British Medical Journal described two patients whose moles changed fast after melanotan injections. The authors warned it could confuse diagnosis. More reports followed. A 16-year-old girl grew more than 50 new moles after using melanotan with tanning beds, and a 20-year-old developed melanoma after injections. One 22-year-old developed melanoma inside the mouth after using a nasal spray.

Does It Cause Melanoma?

Nobody knows for sure. Case reports cannot prove the drug caused these cases, and no study has measured the risk. One dermatologist told KQED she cannot say for certain that melanotan causes melanoma. Still, many patients in the reports had fair skin, lots of moles, a family history of melanoma, or regular sunbed use. Darker moles can also hide early warning signs, which makes skin cancer harder to spot.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Check your skin once a month and take photos. After using melanin tanning injections, see a doctor if a mole shows any of these:

  • A change in size, shape, or colour

  • Ragged or uneven edges

  • Bleeding or itching

  • A new dark spot that keeps growing

Brown patches on the gums or inside the mouth also need a check.

Is Melanotan Legal in the UK?

Many listings for melanotan injections for sale say “for research only.” That label does not change the law. The MHRA classed melanotan as an unlicensed medicine in 2008, and supply can carry up to two years in prison and an unlimited fine.

Sellers advertising melanotan for sale in the UK also come with a quality problem. The MHRA says the contents of these products are unknown, and one lab check of two vials found only 30% purity. The regulator received 18 reports describing 74 suspected reactions and closed 72 selling websites in three months. Its advice to anyone using melanotan is to stop immediately.

Safer Ways to Get a Tan

Dermatologists suggest sunless tanning lotions or sprays based on DHA. Wear sunscreen outdoors. Skip sunbeds, since UV plus melanotan shows up again and again in the case reports.

Check Your Skin This Week

Melanin tanning injections may bring fast colour, but your moles are changing too. Take clear photos of them tonight and compare them next month. If anything looks different, book a GP or dermatologist visit this week and tell them what you used. A quick check now beats a hard conversation later.

FAQs

Q1. Will my moles go back to normal after I stop?

Ans. Maybe not fully. Some pigment changes, especially to freckles and moles, may last. Get them checked either way.

Q2. Should I tell my doctor I used melanin tanning injections?

Ans. Yes. It helps them read your moles correctly and may save you from extra tests.

Q3. Can a tan jab protect me from sunburn?

Ans. Some users claim so, but no trial has tested whether melanotan II prevents sunburn or skin cancer.

Q4. Is melanotan for sale in the UK safe to buy?

Ans. No. It is unlicensed, the contents are unverified, and the regulator says to stop using it.
