Kenya Safari: Day 1 — Nairobi to Lake Nakuru National Park
On a Kenya Safari, Day 1 begins in Nairobi and heads north through the Great Rift Valley, with a stop at the Rift Valley Viewpoint to take in the massive geological feature said to be visible from space. On arrival at Lake Nakuru National Park, enjoy lunch, check into your lodge, and set off on an afternoon game drive.
Lake Nakuru sits at the bottom of the Rift Valley, surrounded by woodland and bush grassland, with ecosystems ranging from the lake itself to the surrounding escarpment. Over 400 bird species have been recorded here, including greater flamingos and lesser flamingos, white pelicans, and African spoonbills. Lake Nakuru is also Kenya's first rhino sanctuary, holding one of the country's largest populations of black rhino, with white rhino also successfully introduced. You may also see Rothschild's giraffe, waterbuck, impala, lion, and leopard.
If you stay at a lodge inside the park, dinner is followed by rest under the stars, preparing for the next day's savannah journey.
Kenya Safari: Day 2 — Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve
On a Kenya Safari, Day 2 starts with an early morning game drive before returning to the lodge for breakfast and check-out. After leaving Nakuru, drive toward the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve, passing through scenic stretches of the Rift Valley floor, with arrival at your Masai Mara camp expected around lunchtime.
In the afternoon, enjoy your first Masai Mara game drive. The Masai Mara is home to the Big Five (buffalo, rhino, elephant, lion, leopard) and is the stage for the Great Migration—from July to October each year, millions of wildebeest migrate north from Tanzania's Serengeti into Kenya's Masai Mara. Even outside migration season, wildlife density in the Mara is extremely high, with lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and zebra all commonly seen.
Kenya Safari: Day 3 — Full Day in the Masai Mara
On a Kenya Safari, Day 3 is a full-day game drive in the Masai Mara. You can choose to take a picnic lunch for a full day out, or do morning and afternoon game drives with a midday break back at camp.
The Masai Mara covers 1,510 square kilometres, with open plains, riverine woodland, and the winding channels of the Mara River and Talek River. Beyond the Big Five, it is home to Masai giraffe, baboon, warthog, black-backed jackal, spotted hyena, topi, impala, and hartebeest. If you visit between July and October, the wildebeest crossing of the Mara River is an unmissable spectacle—tens of thousands of wildebeest leaping into the water while Nile crocodiles lie in wait.
Optional activities include a hot air balloon safari (at extra cost), lifting off at dawn to view the herds from above.
Kenya Safari: Day 4 — Masai Mara to Nairobi
On a Kenya Safari, Day 4 begins with a final morning game drive, followed by the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. The safari ends at your Nairobi hotel or the airport.
If time allows, you can visit a Maasai village on the return journey to learn about Maasai culture, traditional dance, and daily life. It is a meaningful way to close a Kenya Safari, giving you a deeper understanding of the relationship between the land and its people before you leave.
Best Time to Travel
On a Kenya Safari, this 4-day route operates year-round, but the best time is July to October, when the Great Migration plays out in the Masai Mara and wildlife density peaks on the plains. January to March is also a strong choice, with dry weather and wildlife gathering around water sources for good game viewing. November to December is the short rainy season, with fewer visitors and often lower prices. March to May is the long rainy season, when roads can be muddy and some camps close.
