Behind the Scenes of Film Developing: From Negative to Final Image
From exposed film to a finished photograph, discover what happens behind the scenes of professional film developing.
When one takes his or her film to be developed, one understands that there is a lot of work going on that goes beyond just inserting the film in a machine. Film Developing involves many things such as time, temperature, chemicals, and care.
I start by checking the film and preparing it for processing. The exposed roll is loaded carefully so that the film is protected from unwanted light. From there, the development process begins.
What Happens During Film Developing?
- The film is developed to bring out the captured image.
- The film is fixed so the image becomes permanent.
- It is washed to remove remaining chemicals.
- The negatives are dried and checked for quality.
- The finished negatives can then be scanned or printed.
For color film, processes such as C41 film processing require accurate temperature control. Black and white film has its own development methods and gives photographers more control over contrast and tone.
After development, I inspect the negatives for scratches, dust, exposure issues, and other problems. The negatives can then be scanned at high resolution or used for traditional photo printing.
The process of film development will be my major concern at The Icon whether it is the 35mm, 120, color or black and white film.
In case photographers want to have quality film development services done, a professional lab would help with that. The negative is where the photograph begins, and careful processing is what helps bring that image to its final form.
