Before Starting an ISO Business, Decide What Role You Actually Want

Working with ISO standards can lead to different professional paths, but they are not all the same.

An auditor may want independent assignments. A consultant may already work with businesses preparing for certification. An entrepreneur may understand the local market but have no interest in conducting technical audits.

This is why the first question should not be, “How do I start an ISO company?”

A better question is:

What role do I actually want to play?

If you enjoy assessing evidence and management systems, auditing may be the natural path.

If you prefer helping organisations understand requirements and prepare their systems, consultancy may fit better.

If your strengths are relationships, market development and finding opportunities, a network or business-partner route may make more sense.

You also do not necessarily need to create your own certification body simply because you want to build a business in the ISO sector. Certification bodies carry separate responsibilities for managing certification activities and decisions.

Start with what you already know. Choose an industry you understand, identify the ISO standards relevant to that market and then decide which parts of the process you can handle yourself and where you need the right professional relationships.

This guide explains the different routes in more detail:

Building around a clear role is usually more practical than trying to become an auditor, consultant, salesperson and certification body all at once.
