Asian and Indian Wedding Catering in the UK: A Fine-Dining Alternative to the Buffet
For many families, Asian wedding catering in the UK means one thing: a buffet for a few hundred guests.
For many families, Asian wedding catering in theUK means one thing: a buffet for a few hundred guests. It works, and I understand why. But after more than 20 years in professional kitchens, I know there is another way to feed a wedding. It keeps the flavours families love and adds the care of a fine-dining table. Here is how it works.
Why Is the Buffet so Common at Asian Weddings?
Scale. Asian weddings are often large and spread over several days. Which? reports, citing Asian Wedding Experts, that an Indian Hindu wedding in the UK typically costs between £38,000 and £85,000 in 2026, so every line of the budget gets scrutinised. A buffet feeds many guests quickly and needs fewer staff, which is why it is usually the more economical choice.
The trade-offs are familiar. Queues form during the speeches, elders wait longest, and dishes can sit warm for far too long.
What Does Fine-Dining Wedding Catering Look Like?
It does not mean small portions on large plates. It can be a plated starter so everyone begins together, a live station where dishes are finished in front of guests, or mains brought to the table to share, the way families eat at home.
Many couples blend the two. A chef-led, tasting-style menu suits an engagement dinner, sangeet or mehndi, while the main reception keeps a more relaxed service.
My cooking is Indian flavour with French and European technique. That might mean slow-braised lamb with a restrained, silky sauce, or paneer with saffron and a crisp garnish. These are ideas to discuss, not a fixed list. Our menus page shows the style, and every wedding menu is built around the couple and their families.
Can You Bring Your Own Caterer to a UK Wedding Venue?
Not always, so ask early. Bridebook notes that some Asian wedding venues charge per head for in-house catering, while others offer dry hire or allow only approved external Asian caterers. Ask three things before you fall in love with a menu: can we bring our own caterer, is there an approved list, and what does the kitchen actually have? Also ask about minimum spends, because popular venues book far ahead.
How Should Dietary and Religious Needs Be Handled?
They belong in the first conversation, not the final week. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies and any religious requirements your families follow should shape the menu from the start. Ask any caterer how dishes are prepared, labelled and kept separate on the day.
How Much Does Asian Wedding Catering Cost Compared With a Buffet?
Quotations are bespoke. The main drivers are guest numbers, menu complexity, service style, staffing, the venue's kitchen, ingredient quality and the date.
For context only, general UK event catering guides put buffets at around £40 per head and multi-course plated meals at around £70. Those are general event figures, not wedding prices and not my rates. Chef-led service usually costs more per head than a buffet because it needs more preparation and more staff, and a hybrid format can help control that. Our private chef cost guide explains the factors in more detail. Whoever you hire, ask for a written quote that states what is included: shopping, cooking, service and clean-up.
When Should You Book an Indian Wedding Caterer?
As soon as your venue and date are confirmed. Bridebook notes that lead times for Asian wedding venues are often longer than for an average UK wedding, and caterers follow the same calendar. I can't confirm availability until we have spoken about your date, venue and guest numbers.
To start, send those details through the contact page and I will tell you honestly what is realistic. For smaller gatherings around the wedding, such as a family dinner at home, see private chef London.
