3 Things You’ll See on an Idaho Whitewater Rafting Trip

Every summer, thousands of people head to Idaho’s many rivers for some exceptional whitewater rafting. There are so many options, you could spend a weekend coursing down the Payette River or go on a 4-day Hells Canyon trip on the Snake River.

No matter which Idaho river you choose, you’ll be treated to many incredible sights. There is, of course, the incredible geology of the state. But what else can you expect to see on an Idaho whitewater rafting trip?

Wildlife in the Skies, on the Shores, and in the Water 

Any trip into Idaho’s backcountry is sure to include at least one wildlife sighting. When you’re on a whitewater rafting trip, you’re surrounded by animals of all kinds. Whether or not you spot them, though, is on you!

In the sky, you’ll find multiple birds of prey like eagles, hawks, and falcons. On the shores, you may catch brown bears, bobcats, elk, deer, and mountain goats looking back. You might even be treated to a wild turkey sighting. In the river, keen eyes may spot sturgeon, bass, and catfish. Many of these critters can be hard to spot, so keep your eyes peeled!

Pro tip: Bring a telescope! Just remember it needs to fit in the raft and stay securely stored when not in use. One small enough to fit in a dry bag is recommended.

It’s Ancient History

Humans have lived in Idaho for thousands of years. You’ll find hints of prehistoric humans around the state in the form of stone structures, pictographs, and petroglyphs. One of the best ways to glimpse Idaho’s prehistoric past is on a whitewater trip down the Snake or Salmon River.

While eagle-eyed rafters may spot pictographs (images painted onto rocks) or petroglyphs (images carved into rocks) from the river, the best way to see them is on a hike.
