3 Jobs Where Safety Toe Work Boots Set the Standard

Some job sites leave footwear up to you, but certain warehouses and manufacturing floors can require protective footwear, and agricultural operations may benefit from following the same practice.

On some job sites, the right footwear is a preference. On others, it’s a federal rule.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the regulatory agency within the Department of Labor that oversees safe and healthy conditions for workers, maintains standards on safety footwear for certain industries.

OSHA’s industry standards mean that when you choose leather work boots, you want ones with an ASTM F2413 M/I/C EH rating depending on your industry. The I and C mean the safety toe has passed 75 foot-pound impact testing and compression testing at 2,500 pounds, while EH adds electrical hazard protection.

So, where do these safety toe ratings matter most?

Warehousing: Logistics Move Fast and Create Risk

In warehouses and distribution centers, employees work among pallets, forklifts, shelving units, and rolling equipment. OSHA’s standards are meant to protect workers from being injured by hazards like rolling loads and dropped cartons.

Men’s steel toe boots with an ASTM F2413 M/I/C EH-rated steel toe and a slip-resistant sole suit warehouse floors where so many moving people, parts, and equipment can lead to drops, tumbles, and drips that make the floors themselves hazards.

Manufacturing: Where Equipment Is Always On

Manufacturing floors combine mechanical risk with physical repetition. Machinery, conveyors, and heavy material handling put feet in the path of shifting loads and dropped parts, not to mention electrical currents.

The EH rating earns its place around this kind of powered equipment. OSHA notes that non conductive safety toes can protect against open circuits of up to 600 volts in dry conditions. For long shifts in these kinds of conditions, look for a work boot with a composite safety toe with this designation added to its ASTM rating.

Agriculture: Heavy Work Is the Rule

Uneven terrain, livestock, heavy equipment, and unpredictable weather put your feet at risk from sunrise to sundown. There’s no hard and fast regulation for protective footwear in agriculture, so in this industry, you set your own standards.

Steel toe Western work boots carry the same ASTM-rated safety toe found on factory floors, in a silhouette that fits any ranch, farm, or field. While ASTM-rated safety toes aren’t mandatory, if you work with livestock, wearing boots with them wouldn’t hurt. And that’s the point.
