Engaging Education: 5E Lesson Plan Examples for Effective Learning

The 5e model of learning is an effective way to engage the students toward discovery and employ skills to gain new knowledge from prior knowledge. 

The 5e lesson plan model eliminates the traditional process of learning that is through lecturing. The advanced study brings advanced methods to gain knowledge to retain permanently. 

What is the 5e lesson plan model?

5e lesson plan model can be implemented to simplify the typical concepts. The phases involved in the 5e lesson plan should be followed in sequence and if required repeat some phases. 

Let us learn about the model through its phases:

1). Engage

The first phase is a task for the teachers. They should know how to evoke students so that they get excited to implement the model in their learning process. Use tricks to grab their interest and let them generate new knowledge from the prior one. They may use:

• Acting as the character

• Through games

• Questioning

• Use Smartboard

• Illustrations

• Visual methods, etc.

2). Explore

This phase involves investigation. To acquire new knowledge students should be guided to explore using their prior knowledge with their team. At the end of this phase, they must have a list of questions to ask the teacher to clear their confusion. 

Let's understand it with a 5e lesson plan example. To understand Photosynthesis lessons, students can examine a tree for how they generate food from sunlight. To understand it practically, visit any nearby nursery.

3). Explain

In this phase, it is the teacher's responsibility to clarify students' confusion if they have. After exploring, students may need clarification on the topic that should also be the teacher's responsibility to recognize that and teach them correctly. 

It can be done by asking as many questions as teachers can, like can't plants produce food in the absence of sun? Do leaves change color during photosynthesis? More likewise questions.

4). Elaborate

Students get advanced knowledge in this phase if they successfully pass the 3 phases. Like what happened to the plants after photosynthesis?

5). Evaluate

This is the last phase of the model in which students can represent their learning in models, charts, presentations, projects, etc.

Bottom line

The model may take time to teach a lesson but when it becomes a usual activity then it would be an enjoyable, easier, and less time-consuming process. The lesson was designed to follow the 5E instructional model of Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. The Engage phase pulled students into the topic by capturing their interest and activating their prior knowledge. During the Explore phase, students investigated the central phenomenon through hands-on activities and experimentation. In the Explain phase, the key concepts and terminology were explicitly introduced. Then in the Elaborate phase, students applied what they had learned through new challenges and extension activities. Finally, the Evaluate phase assessed student understanding through various formative and summative assessments. This evaluation gauged how well students achieved the learning objectives and provided feedback for improvement. Overall, the 5E model allowed students to build new knowledge on the foundations of previous experiences through active involvement and mental connections between steps. Students developed important skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration as they cycled through this framework of learning that mirrored the natural process of conceptual change.
